Strawberries!

Despite the rain, Mike and I embarked on our ritual Saturday morning shopping trip to green city market. Unfortunately (or so we thought) for us, neither of us remembered to bring and umbrella and by the time we found a parking spot, it was pouring down buckets of rain. We're absolutely soaked by the time we walked a block over to where all the vendors were set up.

The rain turned out to be a major blessing in disguise because we were able to get all of shopping done more efficiently and had the time to really talk to the farmers and families who were selling their goods. Since it's usually so crowded, we don't normally get the chance to chat and ask questions without holding up the lines.

As we walked into the circle of tents, we were immediately asked by a friendly seller if we needed strawberries. Luckily for them, we did. And luckily for us they were running an excellent special. Due to the low turn out of market-goers and coupled with the fact that they had a heavy strawberry harvest, we were able to pick up 15 quarts of strawberries for very little.

I did some calculations and found that we had purchased about $80 worth of strawberries if they had been sold in our local grocery store for a fraction of that. Even better, they were fresh picked, juicy, flavorful berries that supported our local economy and were responsibly grown.

All those berries will turn into many jars of jam later today! Recipe and Pictures to follow!
